The goal of the Coolwind project is to have a subsea cooler unit installed and operating on a live HVDC platform as a pilot. The FSCC cooler offers an improvement to the existing sea water pump-based cooling system used on HVDC-platforms. Once successfully proven in service, this will enable the new technology to replace these systems on new offshore platforms.
Ivar Espedal, the project manager of the Coolwind project, explains the implications this funding has for the technology development:
First of all, this funding helps to recognise the quality, innovation and importance of this technology. Secondly, the funding will make it easier for partners to collaborate by reducing the investment required to build and install a pilot unit.
